RFK (Stadium) is Dead! Long Live RFK (Stadium)!

The photo at left was captured in the RFK Stadium concourse after a recent DC United victory. After reading several reports of RFK Stadium's decline following the Nats' last home game (along with some gratuitous dissing of the place's character by writers, fans and players), I felt compelled to remind folks of RFK's continuing relevance. (Relevance to the subject matter of this blog is dubious, but I love the place).

With baseball gone, the stadium will return to an all-soccer venue - that means no more ghostly baseball diamond outline in the middle of the pitch as the field will be re-sodded and removal of foul poles and other baseball-specific add-ons (this info. courtesy of today's Express p. 17). In fact, RFK will be hosting this year's MLS Cup Championship game on Nov. 18th. Not to mention that DC United matches continue to feature DC's best tailgating experience in the vast Lot 8 and the best post-game (win or lose) celebrations in that so-called "narrow" concourse. RFK really is the "people's stadium" - its utilitarian architecture allows its character to be molded by the people and the events within. The bouncing stands and drum circle celebrations color the place more than any number of luxury suites or outfield steakhouses could.

Remember RFK Stadium. Come and be showered in beer and confetti. Long Live RFK!

The local NPRs flacks were saying something today about how the new Nationals' stadium might not be ready on time... Perhaps it's a little soon to reminisce about the ghostly cut-outs marring the United pitch... :)

In any case, I too love with RFK's utilitarian splendor - before RFK, I didn't know it was possible for concrete and steel to soak up the scents of both french fry grease and urine. Now I know better...
